Cheng's Buffet & Grill in Newark presents itself as a straightforward buffet restaurant specializing in a mix of Asian and Chinese cuisine, including some Mongolian barbecue influences. Located in a practical strip mall setting on Log Pond Drive, the spot is easy to access with ample parking and is wheelchair friendly, though the building itself and its decor lean toward the older side. This gives the place a dated, no-frills atmosphere that centers attention firmly on the food selection rather than ambiance.

The buffet lineup offers a broad range of options suited for diners who appreciate variety, with highlights like crab legs, General TSO’s chicken, and an assortment of noodles and seafood items such as scallops and mussels. Fans of classic buffet fare will notice a mix of Americanized Chinese dishes side by side with more unusual picks like frog legs and seafood wrapped in bacon, making it a spot where you can casually sample a bit of everything without expectation of fine dining polish. The presence of traditional soups like hot and sour and wonton also reflects a balanced menu between satisfying comfort food and lighter, more traditional Asian flavors.

Locals and repeat visitors tend to enjoy the reasonable price point given the quantity and variety available, making Cheng’s a practical choice for casual family dinners or group outings where everyone can find something they like. The staff tends to be welcoming and keeps an eye on table needs, which supports a relaxed, easy-going experience rather than a rushed or overly formal one.

Timing can affect the experience—arriving closer to closing time sometimes means the food isn’t as fresh or plentiful, so earlier dining might be better for sampling a full and vibrant selection. Dessert options like soft serve twist ice cream offer a simple finish to the meal, appreciated by families and those looking for a sweet treat without fuss.

In all, Cheng's Buffet & Grill fits well as a straightforward, affordably priced buffet for those in Newark who want a wide variety of familiar Asian-inspired dishes in a low-key environment. Visitors seeking a polished atmosphere might look elsewhere, but those prioritizing quantity, selection, and a casual dining vibe will find this spot meets those needs.

First time my brother and I dined here. Was pleasantly surprised with the selection. Located in a strip mall. Lots of parking available. Handicap accessible. Older building, outdated establishment but the food buffet was the reason we picked this restaurant. Diamond in the rough so to speak. Prices were fair, especially for the selection offered. The staff was friendly and attentive. We enjoyed eating here. I recommend this establishment to others, and will definitely be back... And with the whole family! Bon appetit and Godspeed everyone!

We got there late, almost closing. Some food was getting dried out but I'm sure was good when fresh. Scallops were too fishy tasting. People who worked there were very friendly. I'd recommend it just go before closing.

I was very surprised with Cheng's Buffet. It's been over a decade since I've last been here, and it's very much a similar experience as it always has been. The floors and upholstery have been updated, which helps with presentation so very much. The food was good for a buffet. A wide variety of American Chinese, Seafood and a few traditional things like fried chicken wings and au gratin potatoes. You'll be hard pressed leaving here hungry.

I’ve been here a few times now. Solid food, good selection and affordable prices. Dessert options are good as well and a solid place for casual dining.
